Pipes Up!

 by The Naked Piper

When a drum major gives you "Pipes UP!" the first thing he will do is blow his whistle once.

As in the first photo, you put the bottom of the bass drone into your sporran in front of you on this whistle.

Then the drum major blows his whistle again.

At this whistle, you take your chanter and put it alongside your hip bone, pointing backwards, as in the second photo.

At the third whistle, you raise the pipes as shown in the third picture, pointing the blowpipe into your mouth.

From that point, you begin your inflation of the bag.

Until the inflation point, all pipers in the band are making their movements together. Inflation of the bag happens in each piper's own time, and then when the drum major sees all are ready, he'll call the tune and give the count off.

At that point, you strike in and begin the tune, on the bass drum's signal.
